News 4’s June Community Partner

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Lowcountry Orphan Relief is the June Community Partner at News 4.

The non-profit provides necessary items and support for children entering foster care to make the transition a little easier.Bins of toiletries and racks of clothes are among the items included in care kits.

"This is a special kind of group of children," Lowcountry Orphan Relief Executive Director Sara Wallace said. "They didn't ask to be in these situations. They're too young to even really know that this isn't really normal, so this is something we can do even i it's small, you know, it's just two weeks of clothing and shoes, but it means a lot to them.”

It's the volunteers that help make it happen. For Karen Laughlin, who's been a volunteer for three years, it's a labor of love.

"They get a ton of donations and it really takes a lot of man hours to sort separate," Laughlin said. "You don't want to give kids who may be in a distressed situation junky clothes. You want to give them something nice."
